“Documentary Visionaries”
March 30, 2006
Missoulian
Doug Hawes-Davis is more used to handing out awards than accepting
them. As the founder and one of the lead organizers of the Big
Sky Documentary Film Festival, Hawes-Davis sometimes seems at
risk – locally anyway – of having the reputation of
the high-profile annual festival overshadow his considerable accomplishments
as a filmmaker.
In fact, together with fellow filmmaker, Drury Gunn Carr of High
Plains Films, Hawes-Davis is responsible for such productions as
Libby, Montana, Varmints,
and This is Nowhere.
Fortunately, the rest of the world hasn’t overlooked those
films. Latest proof: Hawes-Davis and Carr were recently named the
honorees of the first True/West Visionary Award. The award will
be presented at the True/False West Film Festival in Bellingham,
Washington, later in April.
True/False festival director Michael Falter says that the festival
chose to honor Hawes-Davis and Carr because they “have added
a significant voice to issues that are of particular relevance west
of the Mississippi.”
No word on whether the award comes in the form of a cool statue. |
