Soundtrack Reviews
"The musical score by Ned Mudd (and the bands The Incontinentals and Judge & the Jury) conveys varying moods and tonalities, including dissonant sounds that impart a notable edge to the film. The score ranges from alternative country and blues to edgy, eerie, and jagged passages, marked by quasi-psychedelic reverb guitar, iconoclastic percussion, beats, and rhythms, occasionally fronted with Ned Mudd's rough-voiced, rhapsodic lyrics. From the get-go the viewer is aware that something is off, something is not quite right. The seeming simplicity of this documentary--RV-camping in Wal-Mart parking lots--is deceiving, for this is an angled, twisted film. The music contributes mightily to this quirkiness, a telltale sign that you have entered a space akin to The Twilight Zone. The score of This is Nowhere delivers decidedly existential moments. Synchronized with windshield images of rapid nighttime highway travel, and with ethereal bluesy trumpet as background. Mudd's rendition of the American Dream is reminiscent of Jim Morrison's haunting intonation in the song, Roadhouse Blues: 'Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel. The future's uncertain and the end is always near.'" Journal of Cultural Geography
"Mudd's incidental music is a unique combination of jazz,
blues, techno and ambient guitar-based instrumentals. He employed
several notable Birmingham musicians for his backing band, including
acclaimed improvisational guitarist Davey Williams and Allman
Brothers bassist Oteil Burbridge." Read full review from

"The soundtrack, much of which was written and performed
by the subversive Alabama artist Ned Mudd and his band specifically
for the film, add to the feeling of surreality, of a world viewed
through glass, passing at moderate speed, untouched and purposely
unexplored." Mountain Gazette
"Songs and stretches of music with intelligent spoken text.
Somewhere between David Thomas, Mirror Man and Captain Beefheart
- though that doesn't do it justice. Seamlessly edited. Highly
recommended." ReR Megacorp
"The music combines avant-garde jazz with spoken word, and experimental
rock and roll. The jazz is played by top-notch musicians. The
words are written with just the right language, making it understandable
yet humanly poetic, and the experimental rock and roll is wild
and raw, yet confined and skillful. These are the qualities in
music that make it speak."

"'The trick is to remain invisible, and act like you know what
you're doing. Fact is, that's the definition of the American Dream.'
So says Ned Mudd in one song from his This is Nowhere soundtrack
music. Over Midwestern truckstop blues, Mudd croaks out lyrics
with a vocal manner reminiscent of Frank Zappa, or Robbie Robertson
on a lazy day. The blend of guitar and trumpet lends a sleepy
aura to this observation of people unstuck in time."
