Area Artists Honored with Fellowships
Missoulian, July 16, 2001

Four Missoulians and a Flathead Valley resident are winners in the Montana Arts Council's Individual Arts Fellowship competition for 2001. Fellowships of $5000 each recognize and reward outstanding individual artists in Montana.

Winners in the visual arts category are Tom Foolery, mixed media, Dillon; Nicholas Oberling, painting, Kalispell; Kimberly Navratil-Pope, metal sculpture, Bozeman; and Doug Hawes-Davis, media, Missoula.

In the performing arts division, Karen Kaufmann of Missoula won for choreography and dance.

Literature winners are Mary E. Olson of Helena, play writing, and Roger Dusmore and Henrietta Spencer Goodman, both of Missoula, poetry.

Dunsmore, a professor in the University of Montana's liberal studies and wilderness and civilization programs, plans to teach in the People's Republic of China where, he says, "The ancient culture and resilience of the people influence my writing." He has published "Earth's Mind, Essays in Native Literature" in 1997 and "The Bear Remembers," 1990, among others.

Filmmaker Hawes-Davis intends for his work to "document the relationship between human society and the natural world." Without using conventional narrative, his films instead are made up of scenes, music, interviews and live action. Hawes-Davis has a master's degree in environmental studies from the University of Montana, where he is a faculty affiliate. He has won awards in the Berkeley Film and Video Festival, Best of the Northwest Video Festival and the International Wildlife Film Festival....
